"Everything about the school was fantastic. The course was very professional, they knew who I was when I arrived and were all very friendly and accommodating. They placed me in the correct group with two other girls similar to my age which was great because I also made two friends, and we were all happy learning to the level we were placed at.

You can still learn Spanish on the Costa del Sol - No excuses!

Nerja, Costa del Sol

We all know that there are a vast number of foreign expats living on the Costa del Sol. In some areas there are foreigners living in Spain who are surrounded by all the services they need provided completely in English. You’d imagine that this would negate the need for Spanish. You might also think that it would make it hard to learn Spanish with so much English being spoken in the area. I’ve found this not to be the case at all. The key to learning Spanish is, first and foremost, really wanting to. Once we’ve overcome that hurdle, then the rest will follow easily like a coffee after your meal or the applause after your flamenco show.

Something I have found unanimously across Spain is that if you make an effort and try a few words, you will more than likely be answered in Spanish and therefore begin learning even at a basic level. The reason for this I am unsure of. Is it laziness on the part of the Spaniards? Or perhaps just an appreciation of our making an effort to communicate in the language of the country we’re in.

People often say that when you go to France and have a go speaking French that you will more than likely be answered in English and it makes it harder to try out your newly learned language skills on the locals. But generally speaking this isn’t the case in Spain – even on the Costa del Sol.

One of the most memorable phrases I learned early on in my Spanish journey at a Spanish course here in Andalucia was “poco a poco” meaning little by little. That’s the way to see learning a new language. You have to take little steps in the beginning and build on that as you continue to grow in your learning and confidence.
